Question by : Do you need any health and safety certificates to start a small cake business from home ?
I am looking into starting up my own cake business from home but not sure if I need any health and safety and if so what would I need. I also would like to know how would I go about setting up a small business. I have basic business knowledge as I did a business course at college but any help and tips would be great.
Thanks !!

Best answer:

Answer by Henry
Contact your local health department about getting your kitchen certified.

Go to score.org and arrange for a free meeting with a volunteer SCORE counselor. They will guide you through the process.

Question by eat fish: Safety switch behind panel on furnace missing – is this a home inspection defect?
Last month I had a home inspection done on my house and the furnace was missing the safety switch behind the panel. This is a switch that automatically shuts the system off to prevent people from getting electricuted when the panel is opened.

The furnace and AC work fine – cools and heats up the house well and the master switch works fine as well. Since the system is operational without any problems, is the missing safety switch a defect that the homeowner needs to fix for the homebuyer?

Best answer:

Answer by Don’t ask me…
The safety switch you are speaking of is there to momentarily shut of the electrical connection needed in order for the furnace to ignite upon “demand” . Without this feature, someone can be seriously harmed or killed. Therefore, yes, it is a defect in the proper functioning in the safeguard of this particular home.

Please be specific if you can – What did the vulnerable members of our society do to survive? For example, was there any safety net in place at all (such as nursing homes, etc)?

Answer by Xuligan Whit
Obviously household cleaning supplies, other toxic and hazardous materials.

Knives, and scissors, curling irons along with anything else that may heat up or be sharp enough to puncture the child. Candles should be up high when lit or not left in a room with a child unattended. Same with lighters and matches.

Open windows, balconies.

Keeping weapons and any firearms in a locked safe.

On a totally seperate note, mentally damaging items like anything meant for adults with adult material inside should be put away where the child would not find it. ie movies, photos, magazines. Getting some type of block on your computer to keep the child from anything dangerous or innapropriate. Channel blocks on the television.

And simply educating your child on why these things are bad and not for children.

The recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile killed thousands of people and have left hundreds of thousands homeless. Today, poverty has left up to 3.5 million Americans in need of temporary housing. Haiti, Chile and the US, have 100000s of empty ISO shipping containers sitting dormant. My idea is to use local labor to convert one of these shipping containers into a safe, low-cost, eco-friendly home for temporary housing to those in need. ISO shipping containers are rugged, weatherproof, and plentiful. Local artisans and craftspeople will design and convert one of these shipping containers into a livable and safe home. Because building materials are unavailable to the poor, the design and build will focus on using scrap and recycled materials. Also, all build techniques will be done in a manner that is easily replicable by individuals with little or no construction skills. The final product will be instructional videos for NGOs to build these homes locally, with local labor.

Question by : How do I deal with staff that want their ‘needs’ placed over the needs of the the seniors we look after?
I work in a nursing home looking after seniors, some with serious dementias. I work 3-11, and sometimes, due to ‘sundowning’ we can’t get everyone to stay in bed. They are at risk for falling and getting hurt, so we keep them up, so that we can keep an eye on them. It’s a safety issue. The night staff come in and are mad that they have to eventually put them to bed, saying things like ‘we expect them all in bed!’ I say the safety of these people is more important than the feelings of the lazy staff. We are afterall there to take care of seniors, but the night staff don’t want to have to deal with them at all. The seniors are quite content to just sit with us as we do our books and we offer them snacks etc. They simply are not tired and don’t want to go to bed, which is their right, since it is their home and ultimately WE work for THEM. Some staff are so intimidated by the night staff they are close to tears and worry about them snapping at them. What to do?!
GrayPict, we don’t make anyone stay up late, but these folks simply are not tired, and it’s in large part due to their dementia illnesses. They might have their nights or days a little mixed up and they do take a mid afternoon nap-about an hour or so, but either way, they will not stay in bed and they are at serious risk for falls. How do I ‘make’ someone stay in their beds without inflicting some sort of abuse on them. No, I won’t do that. I truly respect and care for these seniors, and the need to comfort and take care of them is with me always. They may have lost many of their abilities but they are still to be respected. The real issue is the night staff that just hate the idea of having any one of them up. These girls don’t want to go beyond a bedpan in the middle of the night. It’s sad.

Best answer:

Answer by luke
None of Jersey City is all that safe. I remember staying at my Great Grandma’s house on carlton avenue and walking to St. Nicholas and asking my mom why she had that bottle in her hand(pepper spray). That was when I was about 6or 7, which is like 15/16 years ago so it’s probably gotten worse but the area your talking about might be better.

The food situation in Japan is becoming more and more threatening to everyone’s health. Radioactive contamination from the triple melt-down and subsequent explosions of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have contaminated a large swatch of agricultural land. The Japanese government’s response was to raise the “safety” limit of allowable contamination in food more than 3x higher than the limit in the Ukrane (the home of Chernobyl.) The government and industry have taken the firm position that if contamination in food is under the limit then it is “safe” and is sold without any special markings. Additionally Strontium, Uranium, and other horrifically poisonous radionuclides are NOT being tested for. Only Cesium 134, 137, and Iodine 131 are being checked. The government has ignorantly and arrogantly claimed that heavier radionuclides wouldn’t fly far from Fukushima. However, private tests seven months after the disaster have revealed radioactive Strontium 90 250km. away from Fukushima Daichi in Yokohama (www.japantimes.co.jp The reality is continuing to deteriorate despite the government and media’s reassurances of the …

Answer by Poppy
Technically they are school property, this does not say that they can;t be taken home. You take school owned books home right? Safety vests are inexpensive(I own 4 of them). In the letter of things yes they should be returned on retirement, but I doubt the district will do anything about this. Are you really this bored?

Question by Aishiteru: Being mistreated at work ..?
I currently work at a kids summer camp that i was put in when i applied and got accepted to SYEP (Summer Youth Employment Program). The workers there are very lazy and I do most of the work and interact with the kids a lot and they enjoy having me and respect me the most out of the other lazy staff/syep workers. Over the past few weeks we had a evaluation, it goes by 1 through 5, 1 being the lowest grade you can get. My senior counselor gave me 1′s, 1.5 and 2.5′s, never higher than a 2.5, the lazy workers all had 5′s and 4′s. My senior counselor even told me that i don’t interact with the kids at all and that it looks like i am just sitting around the class room all day not talking to the kids, but really i DO interact with the kids and they all know my name. The senior counselor tells me none of the kids know my name and told me whenever she says my name the kids would ask who that person was. I feel so upset. The supervisor also picks on me and even though he does I try to ignore the fact that hes very rude and because he is in charge of me I have to go by what he says. I say good morning to him every morning and sometimes he acts like he didn’t hear me. I feel strongly that they discriminate me because i am asian american and all the workers there are either black or hispanic. AND, today I was sent home because of a “safety hazard.” Which was wearing flip-flops even though the day before I had worn flip-flops all day and no one had said anything. During the orientation he did mention that flip-flops shouldn’t be worn and only sneakers but that rule applied ONLY to the campers at the summer camp. When I was about to leave the children asked where I was going and I had to explain to them that I was being sent home, most of the children were confused and sad that I was leaving early..

Fabiana Troxler, a home care liaison for Liberty, is interviewed about the importance of keeping homes clutter-free for safety. An elderly loved one, especially if using a walker or cane, could easily be injured if they do not have enough room to move freely throughout their home. Home safety is critical for an elderly loved one in order to prevent injury. Home Safety Month is a great time to examine your home or a loved one’s home to make sure that it is safe.

Question by : How to leave a good man?
Let me start here, I am married to a great man, have been for 5 years and have been with him for 7. I have two beautiful children with him and he is an excellent (albeit, typical) father. We started out as friends 7 years ago, and we started dating, but we never had that passionate feeling in our relationship. We no longer have sex (maybe 2x in the past 7 months) and we no longer spend any time together (Thanksgiving was a horrible wreck…1st time in months). He is a good man, young, responsible, trustworthy…but I am miserable. I do not want to be with him anymore at all. I have spoken to friends and family, and 1/2 of them say that I need to stay and 1/2 of them say I need to go, but what they don’t know is that I have been miserable for at least 2 years. I love him because he is the father of my children, but I cant picture my life with him in the distant future…never had that senior citizens in the rocking chair image when thinking about us. I have been to counseling for about 3 months and now what I want to know, is how do I do this in the best way possible? Like I said, hes a great man, hes just not the man for me anymore. I dont want to hurt him, or I want to minimize the hurt. I am in no way afraid that he would hurt me, or fearful for my safety. We own our home and a car, and I have already planned to let him stay here and keep it all. I will move out and take nothing with me. I just want to be happy and start over ….. but how do I do that, how do I tell him, how do I move forward without hurting him immensely?
For those of you that are calling me supid or selfish or whatever else… i am sorry that you feel that way. I never said that I didnt love him, I do love him, but that love is long gone. I never said that I dont want to be a mom… I love my kids more than anything in this world. I also never said that i plan on jumping into another relationship or that I plan on finding happiness with another man. I know that I need to find that in myself first. I have in fact given this relationship my 110% that I can, and in return I have not gotten what I NEED from him. Like I said, he is a great man, he just isnt great for me. For 2 years I have fought for my marriage, and the “counselor” I am going to is a couples counselor that I am going to alone… because he refuses because he doesnt think anything is wrong. Instead of merely calling him a good man I should have put that he is good on the outside looking in, but to me this isnt good. As one poster said, it is a lonely feeling… and thats so
