It is always in your best interest to stay in control of the information that is given out during the course of any telephone conversation that you have with someone who do not know personally. If you happen to not know who it is you are speaking to on the phone, do not divulge any personal information. For instance, if someone is to ask you who you are before properly identifying themselves, you should respond by making the caller identify exactly whom he or she is attempting to reach. If an answer is not given that you deem to be acceptable, do not continue the conversation any further. Hang up quickly, and do not speak to the caller on any further occasions.
Never give out your personal information over the telephone to anyone. You should never allow yourself to engage in any conversations with a strange telephone caller. Even if the person on the other end of the phone claims to be involved in a survey or a census, you should never reveal personal information such as your marital status, social security information or banking information. If the caller does seem as though they may indeed be legitimate, and the possibility is real that some of your information is required for an important reason, it may be best to prepare a meeting that is held at a time and place that is safe and convenient for you. If the caller is indeed someone who is legitimate, they will be respectful of this request and agree to your suggested arrangement. If unsure, ask the caller for the phone number and business name so that you can call them back at their place of business. Verify the phone number to ensure that it corresponds to the caller’s information, and then be sure to keep a record of this phone number in case it is needed later on.
If you receive calls at late hours from unknown parties, obscene phone calls or frequent wrong-numbers, do not hesitate to contact your phone service provider or local police department and request that they investigate the source of the calls. If the situation requires, it may be advisable to have a new telephone number issued to you.
