Guide To Senior Home Safety

What was life in the U.S. like before the New Deal?

Question by : What was life in the U.S. like before the New Deal?
Before there was a social safety net, how did Seniors and the Disabled fare?

Were they cared for by extended family, since those values were more intact then than they are today…

Please be specific if you can – What did the vulnerable members of our society do to survive? For example, was there any safety net in place at all (such as nursing homes, etc)?

after the civil war you started to see things like mental hospitals and nursing homes but the new deal really put things into perspective as far as the elderly and disabled were concerned

    Wasn’t born then.

It was not a great time, but in general people took care of each other. Churches and private businesses organized the now famous ‘Soup Kitchens’. People were willing to share.

BTW: The New Deal and similar programs were not successful. FDR would have lost the Presidency were it not for the start of WW2. First world nations which did not have their government pump millions into job creation came out of the recession at about the same time as did the US. Even when accounting for the effects of the war and related spending.

Since the beginning of recorded history, no nation has been able to spend their way out of a recession or a depression.

To the clown who continues to ID my posts as violations of community guidelines. Grow up already. You have to expect that there will be those who disagree with your opinions. Such does not mean that the posting is a violation of the guidelines. To censor those with whom you disagree with is beyond petty and suggests that you lack the ability to make a rebuttal.

Seniors and the disabled were put in poor houses. Along with the insane. Life was very, very hard for people. Average life expectancy was around 50 years of age. It was not a time that people look back on fondly.
